Argentina Harvest Will Advance Swiftly This Week

Kansas City, May 11 (World Weather Inc.) – The coarse grain and oilseed harvest is ongoing in Argentina. Southern and eastern Argentina received enough rain during the past week to potentially slow the harvest at times, though no major quality impacts were suspected. Harvest conditions were more favorable in the remaining production areas. Precipitation will be restricted for much of Argentina this week and possibly next week, as well. Western and northern Argentina will still see periods of erratic rain that may briefly slow the harvest. No major harvest delays or quality impacts are expected. The remaining production areas will be mostly dry and should be able to harvest aggressively.

Portions of Brazil’s Safrinha Corn Receive More Timely Rain

Kansas City, May 11 (World Weather Inc.) – Southern Safrinha corn production areas received rain earlier this month to ease long-term dryness. A second round of significant rain has just occurred during this past weekend resulting in another notable improvement in topsoil moisture. Corn is in various stages of development with some of it reproducing and filling making this a critical time for rain to fall in support of good yields. There is one more round of rain coming this weekend into next week to perpetuate the good production outlook. In the meantime, eastern, central and northern Mato Grosso and Goias along with northeastern Mato Grosso do Sul have been drying out and are missing most of the significant rain events – so far. There is some potential for rain in these drier areas this weekend into next week, but confidence in the significance of that rain remains low.

South America Weekend Cold Has Low Impact on Agriculture

Kansas City, May 11 (World Weather Inc.) – Cold temperatures in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil during the weekend and early today had a variety of influence on agriculture, but none were so great to seriously impact production. Frost and freezes ended the growing season in some areas of Argentina where such conditions had not yet occurred this year. Frost and freezes in Brazil occurred outside of key summer crop areas leaving Safrinha corn unaffected and wheat was not far enough advanced to be negatively impacted. Coffee, citrus and sugarcane were also far enough to the north in Brazil to miss any potential for a negative impact on production.
