Brazil Rain Beneficial For Late-Season Safrinha Corn Growth

Kansas City, June 15 (World Weather Inc.) – A rain event was noted in portions of center-west and center-south Brazil over the weekend. Rainfall may have been enough to slow or even delay early-season harvesting of the safrinha corn, cotton, and other crops. However, no significant crop impacts were suspected. The precipitation may have also improved conditions for the later-planted safrinha corn that is still developing. Production potentials for the season remain relatively favorable despite some dryness. Precipitation this week will favor southern Brazil while periods of mostly light rain occur in center-west and center-south Brazil. No major delays are expected for safrinha corn and cotton harvesting. The rain will also be welcome for the winter wheat that is produced in southern Brazil.

Northern Mexico, Southern U.S. Flooding Possible This Week

Kansas City, June 15 (World Weather Inc.) – A weak upper-level low-pressure trough was noted over northern Mexico this morning. This disturbance will slowly shift from northern Mexico into Texas and Louisiana through mid-week, where conditions may allow for development into a weak, and brief, tropical disturbance. This system will further shift into the U.S. southeast later this week before tracking into the Atlantic Ocean over the weekend. Bouts of heavy rain are slated from northeastern Mexico through portions of South Texas and East Texas and eventually into Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and neighboring locations. Flash flooding will be a significant concern, as will damaging winds. Damage to cotton, rice, and other grains and oilseeds will be possible for areas that experience severe flooding.

Southern China Flood Potential Rises; East-Central China Drying

Kansas City, June 12 (World Weather Inc.) – Rain fell in much of China’s main production areas during the past week with two areas of concern. First, southern China received excessive rainfall in several areas resulting in flooding that may have impacted parts of the nation’s rice and sugarcane as well as some minor corn, soybean and groundnut crops. The production impact due to flooding should have been minimal. The other weather issue that has been evolving involves less than usual rainfall in east-central China; including southern portions of the North China Plain. This region includes southern Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui and some immediate neighboring areas and the prospects for rain in this region are poor while temperatures rise above normal. Some stress to summer crops produced in east-central China is likely as the dryness festers into late June.
