Western South Africa Summer Crops Dealing With Stress

Kansas City, February 22 (World Weather Inc.) – Western summer crop areas in South Africa experienced another week of poor rainfall with warmer-than- usual temperatures. The environment accelerated a drying trend that has been under way in recent weeks leaving crops in a developing stressful situation. Unirrigated summer grain, oilseed and cotton areas from eastern Northern Cape into western and central Free State and North West have endured the drier tendency long enough to show up in the Vegetative Health Index. The need for rain is steadily rising in areas and enough drying has occurred recently to begin cutting into yield potentials for late season crops. The drier bias is expected to prevail into the first half of March due to sporadic showers and warmer than usual temperatures. Eastern South Africa will continue to experience a good environment for summer crop yields.
