Excessive Rain In Eastern Argentina Harms Rice Quality

Kansas City, March 18 (World Weather Inc.) – Frequent rain in eastern Australia disrupted farming activity, slowed crop maturation and may have induced some rice quality declines during the past week. The wet weather had a mostly good impact on coarse grain and oilseed crops, although drying will be needed soon to protect crops as the harvest approaches. Some of the excessive rainfall this past week induced a little flooding along with some hail. Additional rain will fall in much of Argentina through Thursday morning. The moisture will help keep soil conditions near current levels and could again promote flash flooding in the wettest locations of Buenos Aires and Entre Rios. Drier weather will evolve later this week and during the weekend. The ground will start to firm and should slowly improve fieldwork

SW Brazil Subsoil Still Not Likely To Be Saturated By April

Kansas City, March 18 (World Weather Inc.) – Late- planted Safrinha Corn must have abundant soil moisture down deep into the ground when the monsoon ends in early April. There is great concern that without a fully saturated column of soil late season crops will not have enough moisture to carry them through reproduction in May without timely rainfall and that is always a difficult development in the dry season. Recent weather in southwestern Brazil and neighboring areas of Bolivia and Paraguay has been dry and warm to hot depleting soil moisture instead of improving it. There is potential for greater rainfall in these last two weeks of March, but confidence is low that enough subsoil moisture will be present to carry late season crops through reproduction without some timely rain events.

Interior U.S. Southeast To Be Quite Cold Tuesday Morning

Kansas City, March 18 (World Weather Inc.) – Very cold temperatures were dropping through the north-central United States this morning. Lowest temperatures in the upper single digits and teens Fahrenheit have occurred in the northern half of the Plains with teens and 20s in the upper Midwest. The cold is expected to plunge through the Midwest to the southeastern states today and tonight. Frost and freezes are expected in most areas from the Midwest to the interior Gulf of Mexico Coast states and interior parts of the Carolinas Tuesday morning. Some damage to fruit trees and wheat is expected, although permanent losses to wheat production should be highly localized.

West Texas Recent Rain Best In Rolling, Low Plains

Kansas City, March 18 (World Weather Inc.) – Rainfall Friday into Saturday was greater than expected in the Low Plains and Rolling Plains of West Texas and about as expected in the high Plains region. All of the moisture was welcome and it was just enough to raise surface moisture in some areas. There is still an ongoing concern for low subsoil moisture especially in the dryland areas in the southwest. The precipitation was most welcome to winter wheat and grazing grass development.
