South Africa Dry Weather Promotes Swift Harvest

Kansas City, May 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Summer grain, oilseed, sugarcane, cotton, and other crop areas in eastern and central South Africa were mostly dry during the past week and the environment was favorable for aggressive maturation and harvesting. These areas will see brief periods of light rain early next week that should not significantly slow the harvest in most fields. In the meantime, winter wheat planting is either underway or will expand in coming weeks from Western Cape and Northern Cape into Free State and neighboring locations. Western Cape received light rain during the past week while other wheat areas were dry. Timely rain would be welcome later this month into June to supplement irrigation and support ideal wheat emergence and establishment.

U.S. Hard Red Wheat Will Receive Much-Needed Rain

Kansas City, May 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Hard red winter wheat conditions are highly variable across the U.S. central and southern Plains. Drought or abnormally dry conditions are ongoing in portions of central and western Kansas, eastern Colorado, and western Oklahoma despite some recent rainfall. Several areas are reporting poor or very poor wheat conditions, though there is still time to improve development before crops start to mature. An upper-level low-pressure center will become cut-off from the main upper-air flow and will help promote erratic rainfall across the main crop areas Friday into early next week. Another disturbance will likely generate more rain toward the middle of next week. The waves of rain will improve the moisture profile in much of hard red winter wheat country and should support better late-season development. Crops in the driest fields may receive enough rain to improve overall conditions despite rainfall being too light to end drought.
