Louisiana Sugarcane, Much of South U.S. Cold Damaged

Kansas City, January 22 (World Weather Inc.) – Incredibly cold temperatures occurred this morning in the Deep South of the United States as well as northeastern Mexico. Hard freezes occurred as far south as southern Texas, northeastern Mexico and the entire central U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast causing damage to crops and property. The most damaging conditions were noted in fruit and vegetable areas of southern Texas, northeastern Mexico and in portions of southern Georgia and northern Florida. Sugarcane areas in southern Louisiana experienced the coldest temperatures on record with readings in the single digits Fahrenheit and a couple of extremes near and lightly below zero.

Upper U.S. Midwest Late Winter, Early Spring Bias Remains Dry

Kansas City, January 22 (World Weather Inc.) – Abnormally dry and various levels of drought were noted in the upper U.S. Midwest during the autumn. Weather conditions in recent weeks have not offered much of a change and the trend is expected to prevail, despite some brief periods of precipitation in coming weeks. The odds are quite good that parts of the western Corn and Soybean production region will begin spring drier than usual. Producers will be hoping for better April and May precipitation as time moves along.

Argentina Rainfall Proves To Be A Little Too Erratic

Kansas City, January 21 (World Weather Inc.) – Several locations in Argentina received much-needed rain in recent days that helped improve the moisture profile in some areas far more than others. Resulting rainfall was too light to completely fix the moisture deficits that evolved earlier this month due to drier and warmer than normal weather. The main production areas will have opportunities for rain during the coming week that will continue to chip away at the dryness; however, warm temperatures will keep evaporation rates high enough to maintain a constant need for more rain. Short-term development conditions may improve marginally in areas that receive the greatest amount of rain. The environment will remain less than ideal despite the additional precipitation. The need for more rain will remain high heading into early February with some of the early crop already reproducing.

Frost, Freezes In South Texas, NE Mexico Tonight

Kansas City, January 21 (World Weather Inc.) – Frost and freeze conditions have already been noted southward into interior southern Texas and along the entire central U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast this morning. The same areas will be impacted again tonight with the cold digging farther to the south through all of South Texas and into northeastern Mexico. An impact on fruit and vegetable crops is expected with some production cut possible for a few crops. Most of the damage to fruit trees and sugarcane is not expected to be very great, but some impacted is expected.
