Special Interest Weekend Weather Maps

Kansas City, February 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Flooding rain occurred during the weekend as expected from the northern Delta into Kentucky and parts of Tennessee as well as some surrounding areas. Also, during the weekend was the return of brutal cold in the north-central United States and that cold will be expanding and deepening in the central U.S. during the first half of this week. Bitter cold was also returning to Russia and Ukraine, but snow cover should protect most of the crops in that part of the world just like in the U.S.

Russian Winter Wheat Will Mostly Be Safe From Damaging Cold

Kansas City, February 14 (World Weather Inc.) – While pockets in Russia’s Volga River Basin and neighboring locations saw temperatures dip near or below zero degrees Fahrenheit this morning, the coldest areas were blanketed by snow. No damage to winter grains or oilseeds was suspected. Snow and slightly warmer air will shift into portions of the western Commonwealth of Independent States today and Saturday before colder air returns later this weekend and most days next week. Nighttime low temperatures will again drop near or below zero degrees in portions of crop country and this weekend’s snow event should help bolster snowpack ahead of the cold. Crop damage will likely be minimal as the main areas will be covered by snow or will not see damaging cold weather.

Southern China Still In Need Of More Significant Rain

Kansas City, February 14 (World Weather Inc.) – Spotty precipitation was noted in a few locations of China during the past week, most notably the Yangtze River Basin. Southern China generally missed out on the rain and continues to struggle with severe moisture deficits. Concerns are increasing for delayed planting for several areas in southern China in the coming weeks due to the ongoing dryness. Waves of precipitation will occur near and south of the Yangtze River through the end of next week. However, the driest areas in southern China will not receive enough rain to significantly improve the moisture profile. Early-season planting may get off to a sluggish start, even in areas that receive timely rain. Winter rapeseed prospects will otherwise remain favorable in the Yangtze River Basin due to the waves of precipitation through the end of next week. The North China Plain will be drier than normal in the coming days, though winter wheat prospects will remain favorable as well.
