North Africa Receives Beneficial Rain

Kansas City, April 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Rain fell across a large part of North Africa’s durum wheat and barley production region this past week. Sufficient rain fell in north-central and northeastern Algeria into northern Tunisia to restore favorable crop conditions after recent drying. The moisture came too late for southwestern Morocco crops and northwestern Algeria remains too dry and in need of more rain. Precipitation in this coming week will be greatest Sunday into Monday for northeastern Algeria and northern Tunisia while most other areas face about ten days of drying.

South Africa Rain Taking A Short Break; More Coming

Kansas City, April 17 (World Weather Inc.) – A little less rain fell in portions of South Africa this past week allowing some fields to dry down a little bit after recent frequent rain and harvest delays. The break from precipitation will continue through the weekend and then there will be a notable boost in precipitation once again causing a new setback in fieldwork. Some beneficial moisture will reach into a few western wheat, barley and canola areas next week to improve planting moisture for the 2025 winter crop.

Tropical Cyclone Errol to Bring Rain to Northwest Australia

Kansas City, April 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Cyclone Errol is equivalent to a strong category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale and is expected to make landfall over the Dampier Peninsula, north of Broome, in Western Australia. Errol is gradually weakening as it nears the coastline and is expected to make landfall within the next 24-hours with sustained wind speeds around 65 mph. Heavy rain varying between 2.50 and 7.00 inches is anticipated. Property damage in this area is likely, though the impacts to agriculture and shipping will be relatively minimal.

Australia Planting Moisture Should Improve During May

Kansas City, April 17 (World Weather Inc.) – Warm ocean water surrounding Australia (especially in the west and south) will help contribute to an active autumn planting pattern that should bring needed moisture to wheat, barley and canola production areas this autumn. Some rain has already occurred in Western Australia the past week, although it was not enough to bolster soil moisture in a serious manner. The precipitation was evidence that the environment will be ripe for additional moisture later this season when air temperatures begin to cool more significantly.
