Indonesia Dryness Remains; Malaysia Crops Still Favorable

Kansas City, August 10 (World Weather Inc.) – Rain in the first ten days of August was limited in central and southern Kalimantan, southern Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi and the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia while rain fell more significantly to the north. The lack of rain in these central and southern Indonesia locations has led to short and very short soil moisture and some warmer than usual temperatures which is stressing many short-rooted crops. West-central and northern Sumatra and most of Malaysia have continued to receive timely rain so far this month preserving favorable crop conditions. Some areas in New Guinea have also reported well below normal rainfall. Drier-than-usual weather will prevail for at least another week. Malaysia, northern Sumatra, and neighboring areas in Kalimantan will still see spotty rain while areas farther south receive little to no precipitation. Dryness will intensify and may continue to promote less than favorable development.

U.S. Southern Plains, Delta Crops Facing Heat, Moisture Stress

Kansas City, August 10 (World Weather Inc.) – The U.S. southern Plains and Delta dried down significantly during the past week. A large section of Texas and Oklahoma into the northern Delta were dry or did not receive enough rain to counter evaporation. Coarse grains, oilseeds, cotton, and other crops may have been stressed in the hottest and driest areas. At least another week of dry and warm to hot weather is slated for these areas this week. Additional drying will occur and drought will spread and intensify. Heat and moisture stress will continue for the crops that are still in the development stages. Concern for production losses will increase.

Philippines, SE China Endure Significant Weekend Floods

Kansas City, August 10 (World Weather Inc.) – Typhoon Dolphin moved into Zhejiang, China around 1200 UTC Sunday and brought torrential rain and flooding to that province and areas north through Shanghai Sunday into this morning. Serious flooding and some wind damage resulted from the storm and more was expected later today as the system moves deeper into east-central China. In the meantime, torrential rain of greater intensity impacted western portions of Luzon Island also resulting from the large circulation around the typhoon. Damage to personal property, infrastructure and rice was strongly suspected in western Luzon. Additional rain was expected over Luzon Island through the next week to ten days to exacerbate the flood situation. Most of the remnants of Typhoon Dolphin will shift to Henan and Anhui, China over the next few days producing more rain and flooding raising some risk for crop and property damage there as well.
