Northern Plains Rain Winding Down After Big Moisture Boost

Kansas City, May 16 (World Weather Inc.) – A general soaking rain has fallen from southwestern Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan through the western Dakotas in the past couple of days. The rain event is expected to wind down with most of the precipitation ending overnight tonight and early Saturday morning. Additional moisture totals will be light, though, 1.00 to more than 4.00 inches has resulted changing the moisture profile greatly for much improved planting and emergence conditions for spring and summer crops.

Canadian Prairies Agricultural Weather Prognosticator For May 16, 2025

Inside this edition to the Canadian Prairies Agricultural Weather Prognosticator is a detailed discussion of weather expected in the next few weeks. An updated 2-week May and June outlook is provided with much explanation as to why we are not likely to see a broad-based drought pattern in 2025. Cooling in the eastern Prairies this weekend will bring some frost and freezes, although damage potentials are low. This prognosticator also presents a special update on China.

Australia Will Remain Too Dry For Favorable Planting

Kansas City, May 15 (World Weather Inc.) – Australia’s main winter wheat, barley, and canola areas continued to dry down during the past week as most locations received little to no rain. With the bulk of the planting occurring late April into June, there is still time for better rainfall to support more aggressive establishment and early-season growth. However, the main production areas need abundant rainfall to fix the dryness and improve long-term production potentials. Eastern Australia will see periods of spotty rain during the next few days, though resulting rainfall will be too light to impact long-term soil conditions. Western Australia and South Australia will otherwise trend mostly dry. Planting and establishment conditions will remain less than favorable to poor.

Eastern Canadian Prairies, Neighbors Face Frost, Light Freezes

Kansas City, May 15 (World Weather Inc.) – A late blast of cold air will advance across the eastern Canadian Prairies and neighboring locations in North Dakota and northern Minnesota this weekend following a significant rain event. Frost and light freezes are expected in portions of Manitoba, eastern Saskatchewan, and pockets of North Dakota and northern Minnesota from this event. The coldest conditions will be restricted to the eastern Canadian Prairies, where only a few crops have emerged. Other than some potential burning back of the crop or leaf damage, overall production impacts should be minimal. Crops that do experience some damage may be replanted.
