Typhoon Podul Reaches Southeast China After Impacting Taiwan

Kansas City, August 13 (World Weather Inc.) – Typhoon Podul slammed into southern Taiwan earlier today, bringing damaging wind and heavy rain to several areas. Minor rice, sugarcane and structural damage was suspected, though the extent of the damage was not yet known. Agricultural areas impacted by the storm are not considered to be major production regions keeping the overall impact low. The disturbance reached into southeastern China near the Guangdong/Fujian border around 1700 UTC today producing strong wind speeds and heavy rain there as well. The storm should dissipate in southern China later this week, but it will first impact eastern Guangdong, southern Fujian, and immediate neighboring areas with several inches of rain that might result in some flooding by Friday. Damage potentials in southeastern China are also expected to be relatively low.

Europe Drying Continues As Heatwave Persists Another Week

Kansas City, August 13 (World Weather Inc.) – A developing heatwave has combined with minimal rain to promote aggressive drying in a large section of Europe this week. Abundant rain and favorable soil moisture earlier this month has crops from Germany through Poland to the Baltic States and western Ukraine in great shape with plant development going well. However, France, southern parts of the U.K. and much of the lower Danube River Basin continue to deal with some crop moisture stress and the heat is not going to help that situation. Greater plant stress and downward pressure on production potentials will continue until significant rain and cooling occur which may be later this month.

Confidence In La Nina Potential Remains Low

Kansas City, August 13 (World Weather Inc.) – The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s CFSv2 ENSO model has been suggesting La Nina will develop this autumn and linger into a part of winter. World Weather Inc. remains skeptical of the proposed event and believes the odds are relatively good that neutral ENSO conditions will dominate the period with perhaps a slight La Nina bias. A full blown La Nina event seems doubtful and a close watch on ocean surface temperatures across the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean is warranted.

Central India Flood Potentials Will Increase In Coming Days

Kansas City, August 12 (World Weather Inc.) – Rain was often scattered across India this past week with exceptions for Rajasthan, Gujarat, and immediate neighboring locations. Southern India received enough rain to bolster soil moisture and support better late-season development for the early-planted crops. Other locations had ample moisture for aggressive growth outside the driest areas in western Gujarat and Rajasthan. Overall production potentials for the country remain favorable due to a good distribution of monsoonal rainfall this season. Most areas outside Tamil Nadu and extreme northwestern India will receive rain on a frequent basis during the coming week. A monsoon disturbance will promote abundant rainfall at times in central and portions of eastern India, which may promote flooding. Minor crop damage will be possible; however, the environment will remain favorable for the crops outside the wettest locations.
