Russia’s New Lands Cold Snap Could Impact Spring Crops

Kansas City, August 26 (World Weather Inc.) – Late-season crop development conditions were relatively favorable for the former Soviet Union during the past week outside the driest areas in southern Russia and Ukraine. The lack of rain and warm daytime temperatures in the south were welcome for crops maturing and being harvested. The main concern through the middle of next week will be a strong cold front that will impact Russia. Frost and light freezes will be possible for Russia’s eastern New Lands and northern Kazakhstan that could damage spring grains and oilseeds that are not yet mature. Cool weather may slow maturation and harvesting as well. Other locations in the former Soviet Union will see more favorable conditions for maturation and harvesting due to a lack of rain and relatively warm weather, at least compared to the eastern New Lands.

Predicted Showers In Brazil May Benefit Early Season Crops

Kansas City, August 26 (World Weather Inc.) – Very strong to “super” El Nino events of the past have tended to produce above normal precipitation in southern Brazil during the entire winter, spring and a part of the summer. This year’s winter weather has certainly been plenty wet in the south of Brazil and in neighboring areas of Uruguay, southern Paraguay and far eastern Argentina. Dryness has been significant in in center west and northern parts of center south Brazil as well as the northeastern states of Brazil, but that dryness is quite “normal” for winter. Market concerns about weather around the world are beginning to turn toward the approaching South America growing season and the dryness present in center west and northeastern Brazil. Recent computer forecast model runs have been suggesting that showers and weak thunderstorms may evolve next week and into mid-September to possibly support early season planting of corn, rice and soybeans. Sugarcane development may benefit from the moisture as will early season coffee flowering in at least parts of the production region.
