South Africa Rain Beneficial For Planting, Establishment

Kansas City, November 6 (World Weather Inc.) – Portions of South Africa’s summer grain, oilseed, and cotton areas received a good mix of rain and sunshine during the past week. The rain was welcome and helped ease dryness for summer crop planting. Additional precipitation is still needed to completely restore soil moisture after the long winter dry season. Waves of erratic rainfall are slated for a large section of South Africa during the coming week. Soil moisture will be further increased and improved crop establishment is likely. Planting will likely advance around periods of rain; however, winter wheat, barley and canola harvesting may be sluggish in the wettest areas of Northern Cape and Free State.

Typhoon Kalmaegi In Vietnam; Fung Wong Aims For Philippines

Kansas City, November 6 (World Weather Inc.) – After devastating portions of the Philippines earlier this week, Typhoon Kalmaegi has slammed into Vietnam today and will advance through much of mainland Southeast Asia into Saturday. The disturbance will track from central Vietnam, northern Cambodia, and southern Laos into Thailand, bringing heavy rain and damaging wind speeds to several locations. Flooding and landslides will be a concern. Crop and structural damage are likely as well, most notably in central Vietnam and neighboring areas. In the meantime, Tropical Storm Fung-Wong recently evolved over the western Pacific Ocean. This system will track westerly toward the Philippines in the coming days and will likely intensify into a strong typhoon. Torrential rain and severely strong winds will be a concern for Luzon Island Sunday and early Monday before Fung-Wong potentially enters the South China Sea.

Southwest Europe To See Relief From Dryness

Kansas City, November 5 (World Weather Inc.) – Dryness prevails for a large portion of the Iberian Peninsula and France, despite some recent rainfall. Precipitation in the past week was enough to improve soil moisture for several locations, though more rain is needed to completely fix the moisture deficits. Waves of rain are again slated for portions of Spain, Portugal, and France through at least the middle of next week that will continue to chip away at the dryness. Potentials will improve for winter sown crops and also for early-season planting prospects next spring. Southeastern Europe and the United Kingdom will also receive some rain while other locations in Europe trend drier than usual. Winter crop prospects will remain relatively favorable for much of central and Eastern Europe.

Central India Rain Ends, Fieldwork To Improve

Kansas City, November 5 (World Weather Inc.) – Two tropical cyclones impacted India last week generating above normal rainfall in much of central and eastern India while seasonal rain continued to fall in the south. The rain was anomalously above average and brought fieldwork to a halt while inducing some concern over the quality of rice, cotton and a few other crops. Most of the precipitation in central and eastern areas ended early this week and drying conditions are slowly improving field conditions for the resumption of aggressive summer crop harvesting and winter crop planting. This trend will continue over the next ten days to two weeks, although rain is still expected in the far south keeping fieldwork a little sluggish in that region.
