Eastern Europe, Russia Snow Will Protect Winter Crops

Kansas City, December 26 (World Weather Inc.) – Winter grain and oilseed prospects are relatively favorable in Russia, Eastern Europe, and neighboring areas in the former Soviet Union. Most areas either had ample moisture in the ground of received timely precipitation this month to keep soil moisture at generally good levels for long-term production potentials. These areas will see waves of precipitation through the end of next week as an upper-level trough gradually pushes into the region. Snowfall will help blanket the ground and protect crops from any damaging cold that evolves later next week. Long-term production potentials will remain favorable for most locations.

Second Flood Event Hits Southern California During Christmas

Kansas City, December 26 (World Weather Inc.) – Severe flooding resulted in the Los Angeles Basin in southern California during the Christmas holiday. The event was a near duplicate of the flood event that impacted the same region November 15 – 18 causing extensive damage and impacting travel. The excessive precipitation event resulted from a combination of factors including unusually warm ocean surface temperatures between Hawaii and California and a series of weather disturbances moving through the region picking up greater moisture from the ocean as they moved inland. The Sierra Nevada and other areas in northern California were also impacted. World Weather, Inc. suggests there is some potential for another wave of significant rain in the first days of February.

South Africa Crop Conditions Will Remain Favorable

Kansas City, December 24 (World Weather Inc.) – The main production areas in South Africa saw several waves of rain during the past week. Rainfall was enough to bolster or keep soil moisture at favorable levels for aggressive establishment and growth. Planting of the coarse grains, oilseeds, and cotton may have been sluggish during the wetter periods, as was any winter wheat harvesting not yet complete. South Africa’s crop country will continue to see a mix of erratic rain and sunshine through the middle of next week. Crop prospects will remain favorable due to the additional rain. Planting and general fieldwork will advance around the periods of rain as well.

Argentina Dryness To Expand In South; Local Flooding NE

Kansas City, December 24 (World Weather Inc.) – Rain fell favorably across most of Argentina during the past week. Some local flooding occurred in the far northeast where excessive precipitation was noted and where the ground is now saturated with moisture. In contrast, soil conditions in La Pampa are a little too dry as are a few areas in neighboring Buenos Aires, San Luis and southwestern Cordoba. Most of Argentina’s crops are in good condition, but some expansion of dryness is likely in the far south during the next seven to ten days while additional rain the northeast is likely to lead to additional bouts of flooding.
