NW Africa Winter Crop Prospects Improving Due To Rain

Kansas City, December 31 (World Weather Inc.) – Rainfall trended near to above normal in a large section of northwestern Africa’s winter grain and oilseed areas in recent weeks. Morocco in particular has received significant rain that has helped improve the multi-year drought. Waves of rain are again slated for Morocco during the coming week and crop conditions will remain relatively favorable. Algeria and Tunisia will otherwise receive little or no rain. These areas have some moisture to support establishment and growth, though the need for timely rain will increase later in January.

Some SE U.S. Sugarcane, Citrus To See Frost, Brief Freezes

Kansas City, December 30 (World Weather Inc.) – Frost and freeze conditions are likely to impact sugarcane areas of Louisiana and minor citrus production areas of northern Florida Wednesday morning for the third time since October. The impact of cold conditions has been relatively low in past events and the same is expected Wednesday. Temperatures will not be cold enough to induce any permanent damage in sugarcane areas, but some citrus groves in northern Florida will need the assistance of irrigation systems to provide some protection to unharvested fruit and flower buds for the coming season. Other fruit trees in the southeastern United States have been impacted by widely swinging temperatures in recent weeks and this trend will continue into late winter.

East-Central, NE Brazil Drying Not A Problem As Rain Resumes

Kansas City, December 29 (World Weather Inc.) – East-central and northeastern Brazil weather last week was limited and temperatures trended warmer than usual resulting in accelerated drying. Soil conditions firmed in many areas, but abundant to excessive rain reported in the previous week had the ground plenty wet so that when drying occurred recently it turned out to be a blessing rather than a threat to crops. Weather conditions are now trending wetter again and all of Brazil (including the south) will be favorably moist over the next two weeks supporting normal crop development and maintaining favorable production potentials.

Argentina’s Pampas Farming Region Will Dry Down Further

Kansas City, December 29 (World Weather Inc.) – The southern half of Argentina dried down during the past week as many areas went without rain and temperatures surged above normal at times. Another week of drier and warmer weather is in store for the Pampas farming region again. These areas will continue to dry down and crops may be stressed. Market concerns for negative production impacts will increase, although one more week of dryness is unlikely to harm yield potentials – a second week might have a little impact. In the meantime, northern Argentina received significant rain during the past week with periods of rain continuing in the coming days. The region will have ample moisture for the crops, though late-season planting and general fieldwork may advance slowly.
