U.S. Frost, Freezes To Benefit Crops More Than Threaten Them

Kansas City, October 16 (World Weather Inc.) – Frost and freezes will occur far to the south in the southwestern U.S. Plains tonight, but the impact of this earlier than usual event will be low. Most summer crops in the Great Plains and Midwest are far enough advanced to benefit more from the frost and freezes than be adversely impacted. Leaf defoliation for cotton and soybeans will be accelerated after this frost event passes and that should lead to faster harvesting. Only a few crops are immature enough to be harmed by the cold and the impact would likely only be a slight decline in quality.

Hurricane Trudy Intensifies, Tropical Storm Simon Expected to Dissipate

Hurricane Trudy continues to intensify over the eastern Pacific and is expected to bring impacts to the southwestern Mexico coastline this weekend. Currently, between 4.00 and 12.00 inches of rain will be possible along the coast of Michoacán northwestward to coastal Jalisco. If higher rain totals verify and high winds occur, it could leave sugarcane and rice vulnerable near the coast. Those with interest in southwestern Mexico should monitor the progress of the system closely. Tropical Storm Simon is no longer expected to be a direct threat to land and will dissipate in the next 24 to 48 hours.
