Brazil Harvest, Safrinha Corn Planting Advancing Around Rain

Kansas City, February 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Harvesting of early-season crops and safrinha corn planting continued to expand across Brazil in recent days. Periods of significant rain in center-west and center-south Brazil may have delayed fieldwork at times during the past week while conditions were more favorable in the south. Establishment conditions remain relatively favorable for the early-planted safrinha corn, though several fields still need much more rain to support ideal long-term production potentials. Waves of rain are slated for much of Brazil this week that will help bolster or keep soil moisture at adequate to excessive levels. Harvesting and safrinha corn planting will likely advance swiftly around the rain. Establishment and early-season development conditions will remain relatively good in the main safrinha corn areas as well.

Tropical Cyclone Mitchell Reaches Shark Bay, Western Australia

Kansas City, February 9 (World Weather Inc.) – Tropical Cyclone Mitchell was moving into Shark Bay in west-central parts of Western Australia today while producing 60 mph sustained wind speeds. The storm traversed most of the northern coast of Western Australia during the weekend producing some heavy rain and windy conditions. Disruptions to shipping activity resulted and a few coastal areas were roughed up a bit, but most of the nation was spared of much damage. Today, the storm will move through Shark Bay producing rough seas, some damaging wind and torrential rainfall and the moisture will stream into the interior parts of Western Australia’s primary agricultural region tonight into Wednesday.

U.S. Hard Red Wheat Areas Will See Drought Expand, Intensify

Kansas City, February 6 (World Weather Inc.) – The U.S. central and southern Plains received limited to no precipitation during the past week. Temperatures were seasonable to seasonably warm at times and started to firm the topsoil in most locations. Another week of drier weather is slated for hard red winter wheat country with temperatures climbing above to well above normal. Drying rates will be much higher compared to the past week and drought is expected to expand and intensify. The need for significant rain and milder temperatures will be high later this month and early March to support better long-term development conditions. There is potential for increased precipitation during the February 14 – 20 period, which could offer minor relief from the drying trend for some, though not enough to improve long-term soil conditions.

Port Hedlund, Australia May Be Impacted By Tropical System

Kansas City, February 5 (World Weather Inc.) – A disorganized tropical system was advancing over the Dampier Peninsula in Western Australia this morning. This disturbance will enter the Indian Ocean later today and slowly advance farther west Friday and Saturday just north of the Western Australia coastline. The disturbance will still generate periods of significant rain along the northern Western Australia coastline, Port Hedlund included. Rain and high storm surge may impact or delay shipping to and out of Port Hedlund and several neighboring areas. Only minor port and infrastructure damage is expected. The disturbance will hug the Western Australia coastline later this weekend before potentially moving inland over central Western Australia early next week.

Western South Africa Still Too Dry For Ideal Crop Conditions

Kansas City, February 5 (World Weather Inc.) – Western sections of Free State and North West remain too dry for ideal crop conditions. Spotty rain was noted during the past week, though not enough fell to fix the moisture deficits that intensified in recent weeks. Coarse grain, oilseed, and cotton prospects remain favorable for much of South Africa this season due to timely rain over the planting and growing season. Rain is otherwise needed in western fringes of crop country to ensure good production potentials. Precipitation will often be scattered across the country during the coming week with some of the most significant rain occurring in the south. Western Free State and North West will otherwise only receive light rain and the ground will remain too dry for favorable crop development.
