Russia Warming Brings Short Term Crop, Field Improvements

Kansas City, May 21 (World Weather Inc.) – Planting of spring and summer grain and oilseeds was lagging well behind normal in portions of Russia and neighboring areas in the former Soviet Union during mid-May. Most of the delay was due to frequent rain and cooler than usual temperatures. Weather in this most recent week started to trend warmer with less rain which has improved crop and field conditions. Winter crop development had also slipped behind the usual pace resulting in some concern over production potentials this year. The warmer weather that evolved recently was welcome and it may prevail for several more days, but rain is expected to resume soon and so will the cooler biased temperatures – at least in western production areas. A short-term bout of improving field and crop conditions will evolve in this coming week while temperatures are warmer and precipitation restricted.

Sugarcane, Rice, Coffee & Cocoa To Feel Effects Of El Nino Most

Kansas City, May 21 (World Weather Inc.) – Weather adversity in the world is expected to become more concentrated on the tropical areas of the world during the balance of 2026 due to developing El Niño conditions. Recent weeks and months of weather have been mostly good and that may last for a few more weeks until El Niño starts pushing its influence on the world. This particular ENSO event will be similar to many others in reducing rainfall in many tropical areas of the world and increasing it throughout the mid-latitudes. The impact on North America will be minimal until late autumn and winter 2026-27. The influence will be greatest and potentially most threatening to Southeast Asia. Rice, sugarcane, coffee and cocoa are expected to be more impacted by this event than grain and more traditional oilseeds.
